Background:
According to the 2001 census, the population of Scheduled Tribes in Uttarakhand constitutes 3.01% of the total population of 84,89,394. Five communities namely Jaunsari, Bhotia, Tharu, Ravi and Boxa, have been notified as Scheduled Tribes in the State, under Article 342(1) of the Constitution.
This is a window to know Jaunsar Bawar area through Mairawna a typical Uttarakhand village. Evergreen forests on three sides, it experiences snowfall 2-3 times a year. 4th side leads to Dungyara Valley, divided by life-line Kuthnoi (Dungyara) river. People here are simple, warm and peace loving. Mairawna is part of Bangaon Khat, a unique local governance system. Constitution of Tribes Advisory Council in the State of Uttarakhand
New Delhi May 21 : The Union Cabinet on Wednesday (May 20, 2010) approved the proposal of the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs for constitution of a Tribes Advisory Council (TAC) in the State of Uttarakhand. The Scheduled Tribes communities notified in the State of Uttarakhand will now have a forum to discuss and review issues relating to their welfare and development, and recommend specific action to the state government. This will benefit persons from all the Scheduled Tribes communities of the State.
