Chhode-1 At timra

These persons from Jaunsar Bawar area in at Village Timra, Khat Athgaon(near Kot-Ichhadi), Distt- Dehra Dun,Uttarakhand province of India, are relishing the singing called Chhode. This took place sometimes in Febraury 2008.

The Chhode are normally interpersed in late night indoor singing-dancing known as Bhitara ki Naati. They follow series of singing and dancing performances to bring in soothing tranquility. Chhodes are akin to classical singing typical accompanied by no instruments played along. Mixture of high-low notes, alaap is its integral part.

There are very few persons who can really master this art. Most others would be seen just doing what one calls 'alaap' in Indian classical singing which gives breathing space to the singers and also helps another singer to take ahead the story in songs.

Chhode songs focus on a historical events which has tragedy written all-over them. Such events, could be battles, feuds, love-story, dare-devilry, conspiracy, etc. There is an element of dramatisation of events.

In this song too, though not very clear, there is perhaps a story about a beautiful girl who defy her parents and elders' advice and goes to a fair. There she suffers a kidnap conspiracy, hetched by one named Panchiya. Though, parents didn't know the plan, they simply felt something amiss. The moral of the song is that one would ignore elderly advice at one's own peril.

I can almost feel the passion these men sing with. I only speak English and I would like to know what they are singing about. Would you tell me?
